Old cast iron?

Does anyone know how to recondition an old castiron skillet? My mom has one that's really rusty but I want to be able to use it. Advice? tips? Do you find this valuable?

Try removing as much rust as you can.(steel wool should work pretty good) Then coat it with oil(I've always used vegetable oil..guess it doesn't really matter), then bake it in the oven. I had one rust on me(hubby liked to put it in the dishwasher!). You may have to re-season more than once for it to stop rusting. I did. 1  out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?

Like she said, remove rust, coat in crisco, bake it in, it may take a time or two
afterwards be careful how you wash and dry it! never use a scowering pad and dry on a hot burner.

Scrape as much of the junk off it with wire wool as you can. Heat grease in the pan until the pan is smoking. Take care it doesn't catch fire! Let it smoke for a bit, then cool the pan and wipe dry with paper towels.

Put more grease in the pan, repeat.

Repeat again.

Slowly you'll build up a layer of burned-on oil that will stop the pan rusting.

I had to clean mine after we had a house fire ( the only thing that survived was my great grandma's cast iron) all the good got burned off.

I reseasoned them. But I can also remember my grandma taking them when they got too thick with age and puttin them directly in a fire. it burns off lots of the buildup. I have done this a few times to ones i got at auctions or garage sales and it works great, then you coat them and bake them. Dont coat them heavy, just a nice even coating. If you coat heavy it will not cook off and you will end up with nasty grease pockets. Then you have to put them in a fire and burn them clean again.

Put it in a campfire, right on the coals. Do you find this valuable?
