I had to clean mine after we had a house fire ( the only thing that survived was my great grandma's cast iron) all the good got burned off.

I reseasoned them. But I can also remember my grandma taking them when they got too thick with age and puttin them directly in a fire. it burns off lots of the buildup. I have done this a few times to ones i got at auctions or garage sales and it works great, then you coat them and bake them. Dont coat them heavy, just a nice even coating. If you coat heavy it will not cook off and you will end up with nasty grease pockets. Then you have to put them in a fire and burn them clean again.
