Took the test...very cute! Love it! What a great web site & so true! I can attest to this having moved form New England to what we consider the South! (Maryland). I definately see a difference!

My hat's off to anyone who can catch a catfish in this manner. My father, a native of Iowa, taught us a far less strenuous (you could even say flat-out lazy) method. We'd take a long cotton string line (maybe 100+ feet long -- hard to remember) with multiple hooks spaced out along it and baited with raw chicken livers, attach a large smooth stone to one end, tether the other end onto a stick buried in the riverbank and then toss the line into the river. Go back to camp, have a good night's sleep, and then return in the morning to pull up the line onto the bank (this was the Snake River, if memory serves). You could pretty much guarantee you'd pull in several whoppers. Terribly, terribly exciting as a kid to be the designated line-puller. Low on finesse, certainly, but full-proof.

Barbecue is not a synonym for grilling out. I just moved to California and this just bugs me.

Maybe you could have a site with great tourist places? That would definitely bring in some people. If you do add it, make sure you include Eufaula, Alabama!

There are some folks over there who recommend wiping The South off of the map. Now, I am looking for fellow Alabamians who are wanting to vote Senator Jefferson Beauregard Sessions out of office in '08. As this is now my 2 year goal in life, I am asking to hear from like minded others... If I have come to the wrong place, kindly let me know. Thanks, Bamablue

When you say "barbeque" in the South, people know you are talking about grilled beef or pork.
Up North and other places in the States "barbeque" simply means grilling outside or an outdoor party.

Why? I am just so lovin this site that I cant hardly stand it! I soooo agree with southern girl..We may talk slower and drag our words out a bit, but it doesnt mean we are stupid OR dumb! I am very PROUD of my Southern Heritage..and believe me I have a very strong Southern accent..but I wouldnt change it for the world! Just because I talk different than Yankees and high-falutin city folks..dont be fooled. I am a college graduate, worked for 20 years as a nurse..I like this saying here..Feel free to borrow it..on ONE condition!! Ya GOTTA BE not ONLY a SOUTHERNER..but ya gotta be a TEXAN!!
We Texas may not be as smart as some, but we aint as dumb as most! Have a good 'un..and Merry Christmas(i also dont do that political correct crud of happy holidays..Lord have MERCY on the heathens who take the CHRIST out of Christmas) |

I found this site because we are heading down south this weekend, Labor Day 2007, to celebrate our Decoration Day. Living in Indiana since I was 4, it has been amusing trying to explain to people what it is! Our tradition started at our family cemetary back in the 40s or 50s and now has grown to include 2 cemetaries that are walking distance of each other, and sometimes a couple hundred friends and family. I must note here that I am talking about West Virginia. On Sunday morning everyone gathers at the top of Estep Ridge, which was named after my family. The cemetary that we decorate is called the Jonce Estep Cemetary and the other one was named after his brother and his brother's decendants are buried there. Plots are free, first come first serve, but you have to be related by blood or marriage. The Old Regular Baptist church that is associated with the graveyard comes and does a long sermon, first at the Jonce Esstep one that is at the very top of the mountain. Then, they go down and do one at the other graveyard. Then, everyone gathers at my mom's late uncle Harvey's house, where his daughters now live. They run the whole annual event which is funded by donations from people who atttend. They rent big tents and cook tons of food. This is not a carry-in. It used to be a picnic on the ground event where everone brought their own picnic baskets, but now the sisters do it all themselves. Everyone comes from all over the US and eat, eat, eat, mingle and reconnect with friends and family they haven't seen in awhile. It is getting bigger and bigger and we refer to it as a family reunion even though alot are just church members or friends of the deceased. The graves are not flattened out. Each grave has a mound where all the dirt was placed back on top. We put flowers all down the mounds, not just near the tombstones. We love that is is in September, because we get the decorations on sale and on clearance after Memorial Day! Look forward to it each year.

I loved celebrating decoration day with my family. My father is a "Yankee" and my mother is a Southerner. My family in Alabama affectionately refer to me as "Half Breed". We would drive from Northern Indian every third weekend in May to celebrate and honor the dead with our family. I remember picnics at the cometary and I remember my grandmother always taking such pride in the roses that she had planted near my grandfathers grave. I haven't been back in years, but someday I hope to take my children and my husband to Alabama so that I can show them how we in the South honor the ones that have passed before us.

That test gave me a 74% dixie. . I'm feelin' kinda jaded! lol! I know a lot of people who would disagree on my behalf. I love that this site is getting a lot of great comments all around. It's nice to see that not everyone in the world sees us a slow and stupid.

I'm your typical part scottish, part cherokee mountian girl. Despite a college degree I still take great joy in using my dialect and people seem to like hearing it. We say a lot of the same things as you, but let me ask you, have you ever used a skillet?gotten water froma sistrien. Put on yer breeches, heard the cry of a raincrow. Did your mama ever warn you of haints, or the booger man. I live in the hills and hollers and let all who read this know, we love our black neighbors, we admire greatly Mexicans. Oh yea, and if we ever heard of any one "bedding" any of their relatives we'd drive by their house and shoot at them. Heck a bullet may even hit 'em. ya never know!
